18th C Chippendale Tall Chest of Drawers, Rhode Island

Late 18th Century American Chippendale Maple Tall Chest of Drawers, circa 1770–1790
 
Offered here is a genuine late-18th-century American Chippendale tall chest of drawers constructed primarily of maple with chestnut secondary woods.
 
The chest has an unusual and especially attractive upper drawer configuration. The apparent three small drawers across the top are actually one full-width functional drawer with a facade molded to simulate three separate drawers. Below this are two genuine short drawers and five graduated full-width drawers.
 
The case features a projecting molded cornice, traditional dovetailed drawer construction, broad solid backboards, thick solid drawer bottoms, and tall shaped Chippendale bracket feet with scrolled inner returns.
 
The construction, proportions, maple primary wood, extensive chestnut secondary wood, and unusual simulated multi-drawer upper facade are consistent with late-18th-century New England furniture, particularly Rhode Island and neighboring Connecticut traditions.

Condition Notes
Good antique condition consistent with age and use. The chest has been refinished and retains later replacement brass hardware. Old repairs and reinforcement are present at the feet and elsewhere. Expected shrinkage cracks, minor losses, wear, surface variations and evidence of previous restoration are present. The bracket feet appear to be original.
