18th Century Georgian Oak Side Table

A handsome 18th-century English provincial oak side table dating to the George II or early George III period, circa 1750–1770.
 
Constructed in oak with a molded rectangular top above a single long drawer, the table stands on four slender turned and tapering legs terminating in pad feet. The apron incorporates subtle shaped details at the leg transitions, giving the table an elegant profile while retaining the straightforward character associated with English country furniture of the period.
 
The drawer retains substantial evidence of traditional hand construction, including large hand-cut dovetails, a solid softwood secondary structure, and an aged drawer bottom. Pegged mortise-and-tenon joinery is visible in the frame. The table exhibits the irregularities, oxidation, shrinkage, tool marks and wear expected of an 18th-century piece.
The drawer is fitted with a pair of decorative antique brass mushroom-form knobs with radial sunburst decoration. These appear to be old fittings and have been left in place. They may be later than the table, possibly late Georgian or early 19th century, but utilize the existing single-post holes; no obvious evidence of earlier two-post hardware is visible.
The oak retains a warm, mellow surface with extensive age-related wear and patina. Old inactive insect evidence is present, particularly within the drawer and secondary wood, consistent with the age of the piece. There is no indication of current activity.
Its compact proportions make it suitable as a side table, lamp table, occasional writing table, bedside table or small hall table.

Good antique condition consistent with approximately 250 years of age. Surface wear, scratches, color variation, old repairs and losses, shrinkage, and historic insect damage are present throughout. The top has considerable wear and patination. Brass knobs show oxidation and surface wear. Structurally usable and displaying a particularly appealing untouched country-house character.
