Fine Early 18th C. English Burr Walnut Cabinet-on-Chest with Fitted Interior

An outstanding early 18th-century English burr walnut cabinet-on-chest, circa 1700–1720, in richly figured veneers with a wonderfully fitted interior.

The upper cabinet is fronted by a pair of tall burr-walnut doors beneath a boldly stepped moulded cornice. Opening the doors reveals a bank of small feather-banded drawers arranged around a central “prospect” cupboard door that in turn conceals a set of tiny drawers – perfect for jewelry, documents, or other treasures. The interior is fully veneered and retains a beautiful old surface with great color and depth. An additional charming feature are the various "secret" hiding drawers that are tucked away in the upper section. One of these is shown taken out of its little hiding spot.

Below, the chest section offers practical storage with two short over three long graduated drawers, all oak-lined with hand-cut dovetails and lovely old brass hardware. The whole is raised on bracket feet and is made in two parts for easier moving.

The cabinet is veneered throughout in dramatically figured burr walnut, with straight-grained walnut to the sides and door interiors. Centuries of polishing have given the walnut that glowing amber tone collectors love. This is a serious period piece that works equally well as a statement in a living room, a bedroom clothes press, or even a very chic liquor cabinet.

A classic example of late William & Mary / early Georgian English case furniture with fantastic presence and patina.

Condition: Very good antique condition for age (early 18th century). Expected small veneer chips, patches, and age lines to the walnut, particularly along mouldings and lower edges – all consistent with 300+ years of use. Finish appears to have been refreshed/re-polished at some point in its life, now with a warm, even sheen. Brass handles and escutcheons are later replacements. Minor marks, shrinkage lines, and surface wear throughout; structurally sound and ready to use. Please zoom in on all photos as they form part of the condition report. A key is included but not all locks are present or in working condition.
