17th Century Charles II Oak Coffer
- 17th Century Charles II Oak CofferCountry of Origin: EnglandCirca: 1675
The piece is a stunning example of English craftsmanship from the Stuart period, characterized by intricate geometric and floral carving.
The chest's facade is divided into three panels, each featuring bold diamond-shaped lozenges surrounded by deeply carved floral motifs and textured patterns, which suggest an origin from either Yorkshire or Lancashire. The upper rail is adorned with flowing s-scroll carvings, a hallmark of 17th-century English design, adding a touch of elegance to the piece.
Crafted in solid oak, the chest exhibits a warm patina consistent with its age and long history of use. The frame-and-panel construction, coupled with traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery, demonstrates the durability and skilled craftsmanship typical of this era. The interior is spacious and well-preserved, making the chest as functional as it is decorative.
Overall, this antique chest is a rare and authentic piece of English furniture history, perfect for collectors or those seeking a statement piece with timeless character and charm.
Dimensions: 56"L x 24"D x 30"HCondition: The coffer is in very good shape. There is some old loss to the front right foot/leg and some old repairs can be seen there as well. There are few gaps now on the lid due to shrinkage over time and there is a crack that runs through the left front panel, also from age related shrinkage. There are other very old dents, dings, chips, and cracks--all stable and typical of what you would expect of a piece of this age. I am happy to take additional photos, please ask.
