17th Century Charles II Oak Coffer

- 17th Century Charles II Oak CofferCountry of Origin: EnglandCirca: 1675This 17th Century English coffer simply exudes charm. It is wonderfully carved and its almost 350 year old patina speaks to all the history it has witnessed. The pictures don't really do it justice. This piece does have two stand out features--two little boxes that were (later) built into the box. Based on the metal work these were almost certainly added at some point in the 18th Century. One even has a nice 18th Century lock. Perhaps these were added after the coffer's main lock failed, or perhaps it was simply a second layer of security for something of critical importance. We can only guess...Dimensions: 53.5"L x 21"D x 28"H
Condition: The coffer is in very good shape. Long ago (likely 1700s) it lost its original wire hinges and found some metal band hinges. The marks from the originals can still be seen in the lid. There are other very old dents, dings, chips, and cracks--all stable and typical of what you would expect of a piece of this age. Sadly, I don't have the key and I'm not sure if the additional lock still works if a key could be found. I am happy to take additional photos, please ask.
