17th Century Charles II Carved Oak Coffer

$2,295.00Price
  • 17th Century Charles II Oak Coffer

    Country of Origin: England

    Circa: 1675

This late 17th Century oak coffer or chest is a grand old survivor having witnessed over three centuries of history. While no longer used, it retains its original wire hinge loops. It is typical of its time with a boarded cover and lunette carved frieze. Below are three panels with lozenge carved medallions flanked by carved terminals. This piece is as useful today as it was 300 years ago providing quite a bit of storage space. (Its survival may partially be due to this fact.) This piece would make a striking addition to any room or office.

    Dimensions: 52"L x 28"H x 18"W

Condition: This piece is in good condition. Traces of a former till, or candle box as the Victorians would have called it, can be seen but sadly this piece no longer exists. The back feet have had small extensions added to level the piece. The top has a very large, but very old (likely 18th Century) crack. The crack is stable  and only adds character to the piece. There is no lock anymore--disappearing long ago.
