  • 17th Century Charles I Oak Coffer
    Country of Origin: England
    Circa: 1640

This remarkable antique chest showcases exquisite craftsmanship and rich historical character, dating from the mid-17th Century. Constructed from solid oak, the chest features four intricately carved panels on the front, each adorned with diamond-shaped motifs and intricate geometric and floral carvings. The upper section is framed by a series of elegant arched carvings, adding an additional layer of refinement. These characteristics suggest it likely hails from the western part of England.

The chest’s aged patina highlights the warm tones of the oak, enhanced by centuries of use. The split-plank top displays wear consistent with its age, including an old iron repair, further attesting to its authenticity and functional history. The sides and back exhibit traditional joinery techniques, including pegged mortise-and-tenon joints, indicative of its period craftsmanship.

This oak chest is perfect for collectors or those seeking a statement piece steeped in history for their home or office.

    Dimensions: 57"L x 23"D x 29"H

Condition: The coffer is in very good shape. There are few gaps now on the lid due to shrinkage over time and there is a crack that runs through the left front panel, also from age related shrinkage. There are other very old dents, dings, chips, and cracks--all stable and typical of what you would expect of a piece of this age. I am happy to take additional photos, please ask.
